James McKenna III

Experience:

Jim graduated with honors from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and earned the 2010 Thesis Prize titled ‘PARK: Negations of Meaning’. ‘PARK’ studies the impact of power, access, resources, and knowledge on space and place making at both a land organizational level, as well as an individual user level. Upon graduation Jim continued his architectural investigations at a design and fabrication studio in the hills of Roxborough, Philadelphia. While there he gained exposure to high-end custom residential architectural design, furniture design, shop and field construction methods, and digital fabrication techniques and processes. In 2015 Jim joined a large multi-disciplinary firm in the city and continued his growth grounded in a more formal practice of architecture. Here he specialized in both single and multifamily residential architectural in the City of Philadelphia, completing some 45 townhomes and 300 apartment units.

Jim believes in both the practicality and functionally of architecture. He considers how buildings house our daily lives and are a physical tapestry for our society and culture. He seeks to celebrate the function of the building in conjunction with its cultural importance through thoughtful space making and design.

Interests:

When taking notes as a grade school student, Jim once thought he missed the explanation to the question: “What is the Meaning of Life?” As such, Jim wouldn’t mind jumping headlong into the disciplines of Philosophy, Psychology, and Economics. Jim takes joy in the act of thinking and looking at things from multiple points of view. He is fond of exploring the world and learning from others. Jim delights in sharing pizza with his wife on Friday nights and wrestling with his son on the living room floor. Jim loves laughing with his family and friends, even when it turns out he is the punchline to the joke.
